Singham 2019 By Dead Pool

 Singham 2019

Singham, a Punjabi remake of the Ajay Devgn-starrer by the same name, has released today. Here is our review of the Parmish Verma, Sonam Bajwa and Kartar Cheema-starrer

He can send his enemy flying into the air with the force of a slap; he can effortlessly grab a barricade to launch a fierce attack; his kick is powerful enough to give his opponent a 360-degree spin. Tough on the outside but soft on the inside, he is DSP Dilsher Singh Sekhon, an upright Punjab Police cop, whose blood boils at the injustice in society.
He is resolved to bring the crime rate in his region, a village called Singham khurd, to zero. For that, our hero doesn’t shy away from walking the extra mile – while he is in action 24x7, he never misses an opportunity to preach the rules of an ideal society to the ones surrounding him.
Punjabi singer-actor Parmish Verma plays the hero of this film, which is an official remake of 2011 Hindi hit by the same name. While Verma delivers in the scenes that require him to be normal, he easily goes overboard when it is time for him to confront the antagonist. Possibly in an attempt to come across as a powerful protagonist, Verma loses the grip of the character. His dialogue delivery goes off the mark; his antics look staged. The intention behind it all must have been to arouse the audience, but unfortunately, it ends up being unintentionally funny. “Galti karti tu Dilsher da dimag kharab karke,” he repeatedly says while animatedly slapping his head. But it simply does not work. Not even once. Verma makes even OTT look normal. Maybe, one requires the acting caliber of an Ajay Devgn (who headlined the Hindi film) to look convincing even when everything around you reeks stupidity.
Kartar Cheema, as conniving mining mafia and aspiring politician Bhullar, on the other hand, delivers a smooth performance. That the film is set in an over-the-top, logic-defying world, helps him. Though director Navaniat Singh chooses the run-of-the-mill way to build his character, Cheema does not disappoint. Sonam Bajwa is let down by a poorly-written character. In a fashion similar to that of Preity Zinta from Soldier (1998), she falls for the hero. But wasn’t that more than two decades ago? Bajwa, a complete natural on screen, deserved better.
Singham is essentially a story of good versus evil, and that’s the only thing that works in its favour. It becomes a pointless journey once the second half kicks in. Our hero hardly has any challenges to face. You know that he will accomplish the job at hand. He does that with absolute comfort, even as you get more and more comfortable in your couch, trying to ignore all that is happening on the screen. If not for its overloud background score, the film would have turned into a snore fest.
